SATURDAY WRAP-HAPPY HOLIDAYS-TAKE 2

Ok, so not a REAL Saturday Wrap but for anyone out blog hopping I will be announcing new features for CRoA starting tomorrow.

The original pdf version of CRoA had several different departments covering things that I thought might be of interest to gamers. I have been working through my notes and pulling together a schedule for the blogzine version that more closely follows that original pdf layout.

Having the advantage of being a blogzine I don't just get to tell you about things I get to present things. Maybe there was a reason for the pdf not coming together just yet.

Anyway, look for these new features to be implemented over the weeks to come.

I hope everyone is having an enjoyable Holiday part 2 and for all those working through them here's a big thank you and I hope the material I'm putting together makes it a bit better.

Rob Barrett's Everweb: The Original Everway Fansite

For fans of the system this is a great resource and for those unfamiliar with WotC's first crack at an RPG is is a history lesson in itself.

The Everweb is the oldest unofficial Web site dedicated to Everway, the epic fantasy roleplaying game written by acclaimed RPG designer Jonathan Tweet (Ars Magica, Dungeons & Dragons Third Edition, and Over the Edge) and currently owned by Gaslight Press.

For a great many reasons, Everway was not a commercial success: its high (for 1995) price of $35, its use as bait for distributors and retailers who wanted to buy the latest Magic: The Gathering expansion from initial publisher Wizards of the Coast, and its premature anticipation of the present-day market for rules-lite gaming all contributed to its failure as a ongoing game line.

Black Gate - Art of the Genre Review: Jeff Dee’s new Kickstarter Project

Last month I was intrigued to see that former TSR artist Jeff Dee had started a project on Kickstarter to recreate his classic images from the Egyptian pantheon in Deities & Demigods.

In this fashion Jeff, who hadn’t seen work from TSR in nearly 30 years, got to go back and recapture some of AD&D’s faded glory.

You see, in those early days of TSR things were changing fast, money was coming in like water into a sinking ship, and nobody really had any idea what they had. That being said, all of Jeff’s original works for the company were unceremoniously tossed in a dumpster to make room in the files for newer artwork, so original copies of his stuff no longer exits.

I SEE LEAD PEOPLE: Survival Horror as a Role-Playing Genre

Over the years I have played just about every genre or at least made a go of it. Some of them, like fantasy adventure or pulp pretty much flow like water with game play coming simply and with little effort from players and GMs alike. Others are a bit tougher to pull off effectively and require a higher level of ability and/or commitment from the players and GM. Games involving deep plot, mystery and horror are definitely among this latter sort. Still, I have managed to play them on both sides of the GM's screen but one sub-genre seems a bit a bit trickier to pull off than the others - survival horror.

Oh wait…wrong…anyway…let me introduce you to the ever elusive C. Apollo Preston, mystery man of game design.

Now someone may call me out on this but my Google-Fu is pretty good and yet I can find out almost nothing about this person and the 3.5 SRD build he has unleashed on the world.

Doing a lot of fiddling with content arrangement and taking advantage of other OGC material, over the course of 8 volumes, has created a very playable system with lots of breathing space and compatibility with almost everything and certainly anything with the core mechanic.

After taking some time to work out a link glitch at Lulu I can now say that for a gamer with a budget, someone wanting to power back up with a 3.5 system or someone looking for something familiar but with some interesting innovation this may be just the thing.

SUNDAY BRUNCH-JUST A BIT TO GET YOU STARTED

Trollish Delver: Wizards given up on Gamma World

It probably seems obvious by now, but the latest iteration of Gamma World emerged with a bang and left with a solemn whisper.

With three product releases: Gamma World, Legion of Gold and Famine in Far-Go as well as the booster packs, the game has seen minimal support from Wizards of the Coast and their future products list is devoid of mutants.


I noticed that this appears to be the fate of Dark Sun as well, since it appears that the Dark Sun Campaign Setting has went out of print. Without the central product to jump start the setting I don't see a lot of new material coming for the only thing they may have got close to being right about, but the early complaints of a rush job and character flood seems to have sunk the setting into the Silt Sea.

The City of Iron: Doing without the cleric class: Blessings & pacts

Exploring yet again the theory of removing a core class this seems to be an area wide open for exploration. I personally think that the character class fitting the setting is very important, the above article (mentioning Dark Sun) being a prime example of that, but I tend to think of how the four core classes seem to exist in almost every society. Just my tinkering with magic and religion in my own project has shown how profound the ripples can become when you are dealing with these 4 principles. They are almost like the four elementals of gaming. Think about removing say water, like Dark Sun all but does, and see how it creates an entirely new society and character profiles.

Panopticon « Swords & Dorkery

I like this word. Its Greek root gives it some ancient weight, yet the strangeness of it also sounds very sci-fi to me.

The term “panopticon” comes from the British philosopher Jeremy Bentham (the same guy who had his body partly mummified so he could continue to sit in on meetings at University College, London). The basic idea was to design a building which would allow observation all the occupants, without their knowing if they were actually being watched at the moment but always under the threat of observation. Bentham primarily saw this as a useful design for a prison, but also saw its possibilities for schools, asylums, hospitals, and so on. Foucault would famously adopt this metaphor for society’s other hierarchical structures and control mechanisms (physical and cultural, so one might understand even religious concepts — “God sees all” — as ways of applying panoptic pressure).

Microlite20, the ultra slim version of the d20 SRD, has been available for some time now, and it has been modded up and down so many ways that you can find a hundred different games using the same basic ideas, from westerns to space operas. It's nice, I've played it, but it wasn't until I sat down this last weekend and gave a version called Microlite74 a try that I truly appreciated its flexibility.

Designed by Randall Stukey, Microlite74 is a game with the familiar d20 conventions, but with an old-school flavor. Coming in three distinct booklets, each with a small overall page count, you can enjoy Microlite74 Basic, Standard, or Extended, each playing under different assumptions.

I’ve spent alot of time recently reading the old school renaissance blogsphere and seeing the explosion of Sword and Sorcery/Weird stories/Barbarians vs Evil Sorcerers/Lovecraft meets D&D/”What ever the heck you want to call it” that is currently going on. Its all fun stuff, but I still find the Sword & Sorcery genre confusing at times, because when I was a lad it was either Tolkien (and inspired rip offs) or later on Micheal Moorcock and his Eternal Champion books (Elric/Corum/Hawkmoon/Oswald Bastable etc). Like wise our D&D games were more Tolkien inspired with a large dollop of pseudo-medievalism, rather than Conan and company. That was until Games Workshop put out their printing of Chaosium’s Stormbringer RPG.

An interesting take on designing your own fantasy races and how they provide a lens to the theme of the setting. Interesting stuff.

Fabled Lands: Castle of Lost Souls part three: "The Demon Road"

If you've been waiting since August for the third part of The Castle of Lost Souls then I can only apologize that it's taken so long, and thank you for your patience. As already mentioned, this was my first ever stab at a choose-your-own type scenario, first published in White Dwarf magazine in the summer of 1984. The extremely skimpy prose was necessary because I only had four pages for each monthly installment. Later we were to come full circle, using deliberately pared-down descriptive passages in the Fabled Lands books - though by then Jamie and I had, I believe, learned to write both well and economically.

Swords & Stitchery - Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea- Kick Start

I have seen the future of role playing games & it involves things like KickStart & Indie GoGo which takes the middle man right out of the role playing industry. This game has been kicking around for a bit of time now & I've seen the threads over at Dragon's foot. The game is another in the realm of retro clones. This one is a bit different through. The production looks very nice & its well different!...Why do I keep supporting these Kick Start projects & such? Because their being produced by folks with heart who actually care about the product that's being produced!

In 2007, we skipped Gen Con.

You see, my Dungeons and Dragons gaming group is an interesting mix of folks. We’ve got small business owners, health care professionals, a college professor, IT professionals, fast food workers, an electrician, housewives, and even someone in the printing business.

Oh, and then there’s me, but you all know what I do. I’m a writer.
We have single guys, engaged guys, married folks with kids, and married folks without kids.

At any rate, the stars were aligned in 2007 such that most of us either couldn’t afford Gen Con or couldn’t attend because of work or family commitments.

We realized, by July of 2007, that we were really going to miss Gen Con. So, we came up with a stopgap measure: Cabin Con.

When I met my first DM he had already been in the game for some time and had played a single character the entire time. The name now escapes me but his 18th level does not.

I had watched as this Mage had created some of the most astounding uses of magic I would ever see in the game.

And one day he dropped by my home and said he had decided it was time to retire the character and he wanted me to run the session. He wanted me to challenge him one last time.

Even though we never could get everybody together to play all the time this time everyone and their family turned out. There were more observers than players and I had never seen that before. To say I was shook is putting it mildly.

So I put together the absolute best thing I could muster. A battle that he might not survive. I told him that much and he said he was fine with that...he was going out on his feet one way or another.

He stopped mid-way and dismissed the party who had accompanied him to the bottom level of a death dealing dungeon, thanking them for their support but not wishing for them to die he told them to turn back and live to fight another day.

Everyone thought it was the end. The tension in that room was incredible.

His suspicions were confirmed when he entered the lair of Tiamat.

The battle raged. He was so close to dying when he finally managed to send her back to her own plane, away from the human settlements that she and her minions had terrorized for far too long, that he was almost to weak to make it back to the surface.

People actually applauded. I had never been in a game session like this and I would never see the likes of it again.

I had not just planned up to the battle, but beyond. His reception into the Emperor's court, the recitation of his deeds before the court, the deeding of castle and land for the services he had performed. The ceremonies lasted as long as the build up. I had written it for success or failure (trust me, the funeral scene would have been something to behold-but I am happy it worked out the way it did).

I have never seen so many people emotionally affected by something as simple as a role playing game. His wife actually cried. I'm not kidding. He had built this character for years. He had survived so much that he had become a fixture, an anchor, that new players looked to as how they wanted to play the game.

There are other stories that I will share, but that one is my favorite.

If you have a story to share please do so. I can't speak for others, but for me it's not about how cool your dice are or how many books you can buy or what system you play. It's about stories. It's our primal instinct finding traction in the modern world where story telling is disappearing.

It's why I will be a gamer until the day I die.

ZENITH-A New Way To See Movies

This may seem outside the area of this blog but being based on a similar model that many game publishers are using now and the fact that there is some great material out there and we have a chance to not only see it for free but to help the people who made it make even more goodness.

I will be highlighting a few of these projects and I decided to start with:

This has been one of my favorite finds and it is as good as the above text describes it.

I grew up with the Mentzer sets, with my mom giving me the red box for Christmas in probably 1986 or 1987. I was in 6th grade and had just discovered Tolkien. The same Christmas break that I unwrapped the Red Box, I was reading The Two Towers, literally begging my mother to buy me Return of the King after the cliffhanger ending of "Frodo was alive, but taken by the enemy." I brought the Red Box back with me after the Christmas break and introduced my friends to the game, beginning with Sean and Michael. The rest is my gaming history.

How to Write a Book in Three Days: Lessons from Michael Moorcock

In the early days of Michael Moorcock's 50-plus-years career, when he was living paycheck-to-paycheck, he wrote a whole slew of action-adventure sword-and-sorcery novels very, very quickly, including his most famous books about the tortured anti-hero Elric. In 1992, he published a collection of interviews conducted by Colin Greenland called Michael Moorcock: Death is No Obstacle, in which he discusses his writing method. In the first chapter, "Six Days to Save the World", he says those early novels were written in about "three to ten days" each, and outlines exactly how one accomplishes such fast writing.

BUZZ AROUND THE BLOGOSPHERE

2011 may be the rockiest ride that the hobby has been on in quite some time.

The hobby business appears to be back in full swing and growing everyday. New technology is opening up gaming in ways we would have not possible in the OSR.

The following are some (including some my own) of the posts that caught my eye. Often the blogosphere’s actions are thought of as frivolous and without merit. But the secret is this is the meta-game. The game inside the game, if you will.

I love gaming. I have my whole life. I was exposed to meta-gaming at a fairly young age in my adulthood, I watched as it drove some people mad and others learned from this ‘other’ that gaming represents.

So now I’ll quit teasing and get to the meat of the posts that I feel deserve a second (and maybe for some a first) look at the hobby in review.

First off is one of mine:

WHAT IS THE 'DICEMAN'?

The Diceman is a novel written by Luke Rhinehart about a psychiatrist who discovers a new form of therapy, dice therapy, by creating lists of 6 items and then rolling a d6 to see which he would do. The rules were simple:

(1)Never put anything on the list you are not willing to do.

(2)At least one item must involve some personal risk.

(3)Whatever you roll you do. Period.

The book fell into our hands quite by accident and spread like a virus. For a group accustomed to throwing dice several nights a week we found it perfectly normal to take it to the street.

I would recommend the book to anyone but with a warning. It can change your life forever. I never looked at the world quite the same way again and I have read a metric f*** ton of books. It is one of maybe 10 that had that effect.

Many took the concept too far. I found it to be a great way to relieve stress and handle everyday activities with not only ease but a fun and exciting nature as well. Wonder what to wear to work? List 6 and throw. What to do that night? List 6 and roll. I did it for everything. I kept journals of material I generated. What to eat...what album to play next...what book to read next.

And yes, I wrote a few danger lists but found it counter productive to the whole idea of the benefits I listed. Others however, well, let's just say they had other ideas.

Are You Old School? A Peek into the OSR

Here then is a tasty treat for someone working a Sword & Sorcery or Weird campaign to bring something to the table many players won’t be familiar with.

Clocking in at only 16 pages it gives a barebones look at some of this unique world setting perfect for dropping into a campaign when the party goes off into an uncharted part of the map for instance.

Although it is hard for me to imagine more people have played something other than Old School style RPGs for years now I am reminded sometimes of what that past was like.

Old School Survival Guides

The Old School Survival Guides are a popular period of posts posted over the last few months of 2010 and the first six months of 2011. Well received by the blogger community, they should be helpful both for new players and for veterans looking to brush up on rusty skills.

Starting with OLD SCHOOL SURVIVAL TIPS FOR NEW PLAYERS and continuing through one for the 1st level party and then survival guides for Magic Users, Fighters, Thieves and Clerics he reminds us of what Saturday evenings used to be all about.


I spoke with DB via email recently as he put the finishing touches on the Clerics guide and he had this to say about his inspiration:

About a year ago, I began an old school campaign for my wife and a few of my newer gaming buddies. Caroline had been gaming for about four years by then, but she'd only ever played D&D 3.5 and Dragon Age (except for a brief stint with Star Wars saga edition).

The other players had only just been introduced to gaming through the Dragon Age RPG. When Caroline had first asked me to run a a game for her friends, they'd wanted to try D&D but I wasn't too keen on running them through 4th ed. From talking to them about PC games they liked I'd gathered they preferred story and plot over grinding. I thought 4th ed D&D might put them off, but I wasn't sure if they'd enjoy old school. After a few months or running Dragon Age, I burned out and offered to run an old school game instead.

They jumped at the chance.

Bless them, but they were awful.

I'd expected them to encounter problems from the start - they'd grown up playing computer games that allow saves as often as you like with and with characters who just stood up again after the fighting ended. None of them had ever been eaten by a grue. I'd armed then with the excellent Old School Primer (by Matthew Finch) and a short list of Old School Survival Hints, but it wasn't enough. They were loving the game, and embracing the PC's initial role as barely competent wannabees, but I was starting to feel that they were becoming dis-heartened by the poor choices they were making.

After a very near TPK on (all all things) Christmas day I decided that, in the absence of a veteran player to offer guidance and leadership, they needed a little more advice from the DM.

I went back to basics and wrote the first three Old School Survival Guides in January 2011. The thief's guide followed in March and, after some prompting, I finally completed the series with the cleric's guide in mid-November.

For a several months the Survival Guides were the most popular articles on my blog -that's not saying much as my traffic has never been particularly high - but they seemed to be fairly well regarded by hoary old vets and fresh new gamers alike. I hope you find them just as useful and, hopefully, at least a wee bit entertaining as well.

SATURDAY WRAP-OR, DAMN IT'S BEEN A BUSY WEEK

So much for a slow Friday...or a slow week for that much. Let's get started.

First I would like to welcome all who have made the jaunt over to see what the fuss was about. I hope you find plenty of gaming goodness here as I try to cover the Super Nova of gaming eras. It seems like everyday I read some doom and gloom story about how all this is a thing of the past.

Well, I have a secret...I'm from the past and it was NOTHING like this-$2.91/hr pay, working triple split shifts (I can explain that if need be) to make $80 a week and then that early Monday trip to the game store 30 miles away to see if what you had left over after bills might score you a Dragon or White Dwarf or maybe that Mayfair or Judges Guild supplement that was shrink wrapped to keep you from stealing ideas for your campaign! (hehehe) (the shop owner swore that was why they shipped them shrink wrapped-keep it outta the sunlight or you just have this misshapen tube with gaudy colors :)

The sky is literally falling-with gaming goodies.

SWORD & SHIELD: What if: Dungeons & Dragons for sale gets the discussion started. Maybe we should all chip in $5, buy the damn beast and set it free. Sounds good to me after the abuse it has taken over the years.

The result of years of careful historical research, Dragons at Dawn is entirely consistent with Arneson’s original, largely forgotten methods of play developed roughly in the period 1970-1973. Dragons at Dawn approaches gaming with none of the assumptions and habits developed from later rules, allowing a return to a kind of free form and open style of interaction between players and referees to develop and play whatever aspects of fantasy adventure gaming the players like best.
I had hoped to have digested this morsel before I ran this issue but time is tight and I don’t want to hold up the piece, being that it might make a perfect gift for a gamer for the holidays. The reviews have been generally favorable with RPGnet stating:

The Final Word: (Note: This is my opinion, not yours. YMMV) I think this is a fantastic rpg, and I would probably play it over D&D if given a choice. A few reasons:
Open-ended skills allow a customization usually unseen in old-school gaming. And the more popular modern games lack this as well (I'm aware that Risus and PDQ have systems entirely based on this).
The Combat Matrix pits combat skill against combat skill, making battles seem more vibrant.
The Magic and spell point system are superior to Vancian systems, and are at least a nice start, and seem compatible with D&D at least on the surface. The flavor seems more true to what I'm familiar with.
The Hit Dice mechanic has a great philosophy behind it -- it's the hero (not his stuff) that makes him great. It helps make a more cinematic game, one that doesn't saddle a character with lousy damage because of weapon choice. Weapons can be selected with aesthetics in mind rather than "because this does more damage."
There is not a rule for everything. This hails back to the days when you had to be clever, not a rules lawyer.

What is Fourthcore?

Fourthcore is an unusual genre of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS that departs from some aspects of the game’s design philosophy. While Fourthcore doesn’t require different materials or use different rules, it does embrace a set of assumptions that may not be obvious at first glance. Elder Sign

Elder Sign is a fast-paced, cooperative dice game of supernatural intrigue for one to eight players by Richard Launius and Kevin Wilson, the designers of Arkham Horror. Players take the roles of investigators racing against time to stave off the imminent return of the Ancient One. Armed with tools, allies, and occult knowledge, investigators must put their sanity and stamina to the test as they adventure to locate Elder Signs, the eldritch symbols used to seal away the Ancient Ones and win the game.

This was the super wow moment of commercial gaming for me this year. I have read over many fine products this year, but this thing is gaming crack. From the day it arrived until just yesterday there has been an on going Solo game set up at all times.(I only packed it down due to some moving of room elements and I didn’t want anything getting damaged or lost).

Upon first inspection this fairly simple card game, compared to its big brother ARKHAM HORROR, seems almost too limited. But once in play this has turned into a great strategy horror game and I didn’t think that was possible.

It also convinced me to blind buy ARKHAM HORROR and all 8 expansions last week. The product has been scaled down in some cases, in some way helping with the foot print issue of AH and another nice thing for those who already own AH the 16 investigators included are the same as for AH. You can use the full size stand up markers rather than the smaller chits that come with ELDER SIGN (which helped me a lot, but I had already figured out a way to make the small guys more visible when in play).

Already growing with variants and of course people importing elements from AH I would have to say this game is great for AH owners/lovers as well as folks new to the concept. The unique dice add a new twist and the ever changing ‘game board’ comprised of Adventure cards keeps things moving and fresh with each replay. Add the clock mechanic to ratchet up tension and this becomes 10lbs of fun in a 5lb bag.

For AH owners who wonder if this would just be redundant in their collection I would have to say no. For the cost and the ease that new people can be introduced to the world of Lovecraft with this game it is more than worth its salt. With a fast set up time and easier learning curve it also will weed out those who just aren’t up for the challenge of AH.

I can’t say enough good things about this game. I am having a blast playing it solo and can see the possibilities of a multi-player attack upon a Great Old One.





Here at the holidays this makes a great quick game when there isn’t time to set up and play a full AH and it has an eye drawing factor that just may land a new investigator in a seat at your next full scale AH get together.

You play an old artificer named Isodoros who is attempting to reconstruct the Utopia Engine, a fabled device from the distant past and possibly the only hope for averting the fast approaching Doomsday. You must recover the machine's six parts from six dangerous regions and assemble the Utopia Engine before the world ends. The game uses simple dice mechanics to simulate searching the wilderness, activating and assembling powerful artifacts, and combat with artifact weapons. Requires a printed play sheet, two six-sided dice, and a pencil with eraser.

Wow…that is the first reaction I had when I checked this out. I have never quite seen anything like it and for the price it is more than worth checking out for anyone into solo play the video (which can also be found at http://vimeo.com/29448392 ) demonstrates the depth of this simple series of mechanics and provides an experience that other far more expensive games can be envious of. Even the art and layout is unique. Huge props to Nick Hayes for what should be Free Game of the Year. It already is in my book.

Thoughts On The Ezine

So I'm plowing through the premiere issue of CRoA and realizing that until I get some help I can't meet my desired expectation of a min 32 page count. Now since the blog and the zine share the same name I figure since I can only assemble a bare bones version of the zine at best and it looks like a blog post why not just do a blog post for each item and get caught up.

The massive mental block I have right now on FORSAKEN SOULS has got to be broken down with a sledge and between all the irons in the fire and the onset of an early winter (I'm it when it comes to most handy man projects around the house) I have decided to just publish as it comes.

So unlike other blogs I post to look at this one more like a 'breaking news' kinda thing. Not every post will be about something from 15 minutes ago but I hope it will be new to someone else as it often as it is to me (I love to go Paleo-Blogging).

I have increased the front page capacity to 14 posts in hopes of making scrolling through easier without having to click every few posts just to see if there is something that interests you.

Sorry about the zine, but I have to get this juggernaut back on course or I will find myself stranded at sea without an anchor.

Depending on the impending snow we are expecting I will begin posting asap. Hope you like the stuff I run across out here. I have been digging the hell out of some of these finds for weeks now.

CRoA ZINE-BLOG NEWS-UPCOMING PROJECTS

Just a bit to confirm everything is alive and well here at CRoA.

I have been doing some cleanup on the Eternal Keep and the other news aggregators I run and getting some much needed game time in playing Elder Sign (I'm hooked-ordered the entire Arkham Horror setup - FFG rocks just ever so slightly :)

The CRoA ezine has been changing. James is getting back in the swing of things over at Underdark Gazette so rather than end up with double coverage I'm pushing out a little more to the boundaries and adding some new categories of coverage. I hope everyone finds something they like in every issue. There will be announcements and such but I really want to expose things that have just really impressed me lately.

Forsaken Souls is being re-built to take advantage of new material and a new approach to its debut. More on that soon.

Now that my Arkham Horror collection is complete (a whole other story to that mess-me and Amazon are going to have to have a chat about some things) and I am finally getting over whatever bug I've had things are picking back up.

Ok, back to silicon mines...

God-16 days-Wow

Sorry for the lack of posts guys. I'm running at top speed but with real life dropping it's fall load on me and trying to back up and organize a lot of material in as short a time as possible has really kept me tied up. That and dealing with a B-Day, drooling over card games that I really want, dying to play a game for a change and not design one...you know the deal.

Anyway, I am adapting on the fly as all good mammals should do and have been weighing the checks and balances of a weekly zine vs a 'release as ready' zine. I have so much material to work from it makes it hard to choose what to write about. Plus I'm catching up on reading stuff I had only glanced at when I was working on DEEP DELVE.

Speaking of the double D, with 70+ downloads I would like to take a moment and acknowledge those who have contacted me and ask a favor from everyone. If you downloaded the Alpha and can spare a minute drop a line to the email or post it as a comment and just give it a thumbs up or down. At least tell me it sucks or has some redeeming quality. And I really mean this. Being an Alpha I know what parts are rough and what needs work. I just wanted to get the process going. I appreciate honesty so don't feel bad if you have negative comments to make. Positive is great, but negative is often more helpful.

As for CRoA. James has been slowly getting back to a weekly release schedule again and I feel like moving the zine to a longer gestation period. The material I am finding is excellent and I really want to turn people onto stuff that is truly unique. The zine covers 15 categories (I believe that is right) and I want to give each its due. Designed to provide information on your favorite part or parts of our community it will, I hope, expose people to other great things that are happening in the world of table top gaming along with related areas like console and pc games, movies, series and other hobby related areas.

I'm also looking at taking the time to do a 'from the ground up' re-write on Forsaken Souls. I like parts of what has been completed but I keep hearing the words ringing in my ears from a post I read awhile back about 'do we need another D&D'. And the answer is I don't know. But it seems the more I read the more folks want more support from the systems already out there and less new rule books that tend to fall into the 'fantasy heartbreaker' category.

The principles and foundation that Forsaken Souls is based on has some innovative design but I want to take it past just being another fantasy rpg. I want people to have something playable the minute it is released. Keep the rules clear and concise and offer a play environment that you can start playing in 15-30 minutes. I will be detailing more of this new strategy soon.

For fans of the ADD Grognard blog I will start bringing it back up to date and regular posting. I just need for someone to figure out how to add about another 6 hours to my 26 hour days :)
